College Football Fans and Fall Weddings: A Season of Conflict

As summer fades, thoughts turn to the college football season’s arrival. While fall is known for its comfortable temperatures, beautiful foliage, and perfect light for photographs, it is also a popular wedding season. This combination creates a conflict for college football fans, who face a struggle between attending fall weddings and enjoying their favorite sport.

A sentiment among college football enthusiasts is that fall weddings disrupt their viewing pleasure. However, a portion of the fanbase has started to challenge this idea, describing it as a gimmick or joke, urging fans to ‘grow up.’ For dedicated fans, college football isn’t just an activity; it’s a lifestyle.

Personally, as someone who favors college football, I stand with the ‘no fall weddings’ group. My wife and I scheduled our wedding in August to avoid conflicts with the season. While I don’t discourage fall weddings, I warn those planning them that attendance might be affected. If attending a wedding during a college football Saturday, it might not be by choice. A memory that stands out is an October wedding in 2021, where my team Florida lost to Kentucky during the reception, rendering me one of the least enthusiastic dancers.

Critics often suggest watching games on a phone during weddings, a concept that fails to match the experience of being in the comfort of home or among fellow fans when watching a favorite team’s game. Viewing alone or with like-minded individuals ensures an environment more suitable for intense football watching.

Ultimately, those planning fall weddings should expect college football fans to decline invitations if major games coincide. As fans, Saturdays in fall are precious, with time reserved for football viewing. Alternative options include hosting weddings on Sundays, which may irritate NFL fans but resolve the issue for college fans.

In conclusion, planning fall weddings is an individual’s choice, yet accommodating fans’ preferences may improve attendance. Sending gifts or enjoying an hors d’oeuvre in place of attendance remains an option for dedicated football fans.
