Detroit Lions Dominate New York Jets; Vikings Edge Buccaneers

Jahmyr Gibbs Powers Lions Past Jets

Jahmyr Gibbs showcased his versatility, taking a toss sweep right, reversing field, and sprinting to the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown. This was only the beginning of his impressive performance. In the second half, Gibbs scored another touchdown and made a crucial 11-yard reception with 2:25 remaining, securing his third score and leading the Detroit Lions to a 31-24 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday.

“Gibbs hit another gear once we got him going in the second half,” said coach Dan Campbell.

The Lions (2-1) utilized their dynamic running back extensively both on the ground and through the air, resulting in outstanding success. Gibbs credited his inspiration to Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders’ presence at the game.

“Anytime he’s here, I’ve got to step up my game,” Gibbs stated.

Gibbs accumulated 20 carries for 99 yards with two touchdowns in the second half and added seven receptions for 65 yards and one touchdown. Notably, he stands as the first NFL player to achieve over 300 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, 150 receiving yards, and two touchdown receptions within his first three games.

“He’s so explosive and nifty with the ball in his hands,” observed quarterback Jared Goff.

The Jets (1-2) experienced a valiant comeback in the fourth quarter. Geno Smith connected a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Ruckert, followed by a 23-yard TD to Garrett Wilson and a 2-point conversion to Sterling Shepard, equalizing the score at 24-24.

The Jets’ defense, led by head coach Aaron Glenn—Detroit’s former defensive coordinator—suffered two missteps, allowing Goff and Gibbs to lead a decisive drive to retake the lead. Smith’s attempt to rally resulted in a fumble, forced by blitzing safety Chuck Clark, ending New York’s comeback threat.

“We’re fighting to close that gap and we will,” expressed Glenn. “We’ll be on the other side of these games. I truly believe that.”

Smith tallied 31 completions out of 37 attempts for 321 yards, throwing three touchdown passes without interceptions. Wilson secured 10 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown, though he was sidelined after a head injury evaluation during the game’s final offensive play.

“We have a lot of real good players,” Smith said. “We’ve just got to finish games.”

Goff completed 25 of 32 passes for 269 yards with two touchdowns and avoided turnovers. Although the Lions initially struggled against Glenn’s defense, they gained momentum, scoring 31 points for the third consecutive week.

Gibbs’ contribution included setting up Jake Bates’ 30-yard field goal early in the second quarter. New York’s offense gained traction with Smith completing passes on four consecutive snaps totaling 72 yards. Rookie Kenyon Sadiq caught a 24-yard touchdown pass to propel the Jets into a 7-3 lead.

Detroit executed a fourth-and-2 from the New York 9, with Goff tossing to Amon-Ra St. Brown’s back shoulder for a 10-7 advantage late in the first half. This extended Goff’s streak with a touchdown pass to 26 games and marked St. Brown’s fifth catch for a score in 10 quarters this season.

“He wouldn’t have gotten in if I didn’t block for him,” Goff joked about Gibbs’ touchdown.

Upcoming matchups include the Jets facing the Chicago Bears, and the Lions traveling to play the Carolina Panthers next Sunday.

Vikings Triumph Over Buccaneers

During the Minnesota Vikings’ clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Myles Price made an electrifying 86-yard punt return touchdown. Kyler Murray threw a pivotal 41-yard TD pass to Jordan Addison, propelling the Vikings to a 23-16 victory on Sunday.

A game marred by injuries, the Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield suffered a thumb injury, leaving rookie Jalon Daniels to wrap up the game. For Minnesota, Justin Jefferson exited after injuring his right ankle early in the matchup.

The Vikings sit at 3-0, a commendable feat, while the Buccaneers face a troubling 0-3 start—similar to 2014, when they secured the first overall pick and selected Jameis Winston.

Murray, making a full return, was 15 of 29 for 168 yards, with one touchdown pass and one interception, after enduring a concussion in the season opener. Carson Wentz directed the Vikings to their initial wins.

Mayfield completed 17 of 34 passes for 217 yards, throwing one touchdown and an interception, absorbing six sacks. Tampa Bay’s offense, struggling under coordinator Brian Flores’ defense, saw a crucial touchdown to Chris Godwin Jr. nullified by a holding penalty.

Mayfield’s 14-yard scramble was similarly undone by a penalty, but a first down emerged from a helmet-to-helmet hit by Joshua Metellus, ultimately leading to Chase McLaughlin’s field goal that trimmed the Vikings’ lead.

Will Reichard sealed the Vikings’ advantage with field goals that rendered the final score 23-16.

Murray connected with Addison to secure a 17-10 lead in the second quarter. Addison adeptly adjusted to the ball, prevailing in one-on-one coverage against Jacob Parrish.

A’Shawn Robinson’s interception allowed the Buccaneers a prime position at the Vikings’ 22. However, offensive momentum stalled, resulting in McLaughlin’s 38-yard field goal.

Tampa Bay encountered adversity on offense, aligning a first down at Minnesota’s 7-yard line until two holding penalties derailed progress, yielding another field goal to tie the score.

In a unique subplot, Buccaneers left guard Ben Bredeson faced his younger brother, Vikings rookie fullback Max Bredeson. Their eldest brother, Jack, serves as director of player information for the New York Mets. All siblings have ties to Michigan.

Ahead, the Vikings prepare to host the Miami Dolphins, while the Buccaneers anticipate a challenge by the Green Bay Packers next Sunday.
