The Tennessee Titans encountered concerning news regarding linebacker Cedric Gray. On Monday, the team announced that Gray is now in the NFL’s concussion protocol following a weekend UTV accident.
“Over the weekend, Cedric Gray was involved in a UTV accident in Tennessee and sustained a concussion and minor injuries,” stated the team. “We look forward to Cedric returning to the field soon and in full health when he clears the NFL’s concussion protocol.”
The Titans are set to begin their season against the New York Jets, a team previously coached by Robert Saleh. Gray’s entry into the concussion protocol, occurring less than a week before the season opener, suggests that he might miss the first game. The NFL’s return-to-participation program involves multiple phases that must be completed for a player to be cleared for action.
This situation warrants close observation in the coming days.
Gray’s Performance and Impact
Selected in the fourth round of the 2024 draft, Gray is entering his third season with the Titans. Last season, he achieved impressive statistics with 164 total tackles, ranking fourth in the NFL, alongside seven tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, and a sack over 16 games. Pro Football Focus awarded Gray an overall grade of 78.9, placing him seventh out of 88 qualified linebackers, and a run defense grade of 92.7, the second-highest.
Having showcased a Pro Bowl-caliber performance last season, expectations for further progress this year were high. With Gray sidelined, the Titans now face the challenge of replacing his presence on the field.
Temporary Replacements
The absence of Gray increases the responsibility on veteran Cody Barton, third-year player James Williams Sr., and rookie second-round pick Anthony Hill Jr. They must step up to compensate for Gray’s absence as the team prepares for the upcoming games.
