The New York Knicks’ stunning Game 4 victory led to a troubling incident near Madison Square Garden. A teenager was severely injured and fell into a coma following a confrontation.
On Friday, the New York Police Department reported that a group encountered the 17-year-old and engaged in a verbal dispute. This escalated when an individual in the group attacked the teen with punches and kicks. The authorities shared that the teenager experienced a seizure and entered a coma.
According to the New York Post, the aggressor initiated the conflict by shouting about the current score, “Spurs are up right now. We’re winning. Spurs in 7.” A member of the injured teen’s group, although not the teen himself, retorted with an insult aimed at the Spurs. This exchange quickly turned into a physical altercation, resulting in the teen’s injuries.
The teen’s condition has since improved. He emerged from the coma and remains in critical yet stable condition. The victim’s mother conveyed optimism, explaining that he is progressing and may soon transition out of the ICU.
“The doctor said they will take him off the ventilator today. Hopefully, he will be in a regular room tomorrow,” she noted.
The Knicks’ comeback victory sparked unrest across the city as celebrations intensified. The police arrested 15 individuals and documented several incidents, including fans throwing eggs at Spurs player Victor Wembanyama.
Madison Square Garden canceled its outdoor Game 4 watch party after security concerns arose. Knicks owner Jim Dolan cited disagreements with Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch over event safety requirements. Previously, watch parties were intermittently suspended during the NBA Finals due to various reasons, including former President Donald Trump’s attendance at Game 3.
Numerous altercations during the Knicks’ playoff run have been recorded and widely shared. Notably, TV footage caught wild celebrations by fans in Times Square after the Knicks’ historic comeback victory.
The Knicks aim for their first championship since 1973, with Game 5 scheduled in San Antonio. Fans can gather for watch parties at several New York locations, including Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, and Central Park.
