Sylvester Stallone Reflects on Challenges of Today’s Hollywood

Sylvester Stallone believes achieving the same level of success in today’s Hollywood would be challenging for him. During a recent conversation with Tracy Smith on CBS Sunday Morning’s series at 92NY, Stallone expressed doubts about thriving in the current entertainment landscape.

The ‘Rocky’ star said, “No. It’s a whole different mindset. The actors look different, they act different. The subject matter, I couldn’t relate to.” He feels the industry has transformed significantly from when he first rose to fame. Stallone compared this by referencing the classic film ‘The Godfather,’ questioning how it would be cast today.

Sylvester Stallone: “If you were going to make ‘The Godfather’ today… try casting it.”

Stallone reflected on his early career, discussing alternatives had ‘Rocky’ not succeeded. Laughing, he said, “I would have been in a cell somewhere,” or perhaps engaged in horse husbandry, joking about having a similar intelligence to horses.

‘Rocky’ became a sensation post-1976, earning more than $225 million globally on a limited budget and winning the Academy Award for best picture. Stallone both wrote and starred in the film, receiving Oscar nominations for best actor and best original screenplay. Its success catapulted Stallone to become a prominent action star.

He mentioned adhering to ‘Murphy’s Law’ throughout his career: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” This mindset remains part of his routine, such as when he maps out fire escape routes at hotels with his wife, Jennifer Flavin, counting steps to ensure safety if the lights fail.

Stallone and Flavin married in 1997 after meeting in 1988. They have three daughters: Sophia, Sistine, and Scarlet. Though Flavin filed for divorce in 2022, they reconciled shortly after.

Currently, Stallone is preparing to release his memoir, ‘The Steps.’ When asked about the most significant “step” in his life, he said the first step is crucial. “It really is that first step. When you go, ‘I’m all in, and I’m going to keep going up these steps until my legs go out.’ It’s the journey of life,” he shared.

‘The Steps: A Memoir’ is set to release on September 29.
