EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — In a thrilling World Cup final, Ferran Torres secured victory for Spain against Argentina on Sunday. The decisive play involved contributions from key team members and substitutes, overcoming strong performances from Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez.
Spain dominated the match by firing 11 shots on target but struggled to bypass Martínez’s exceptional goalkeeping. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente acknowledged this challenge stating, “We had many chances, but Dibu was nothing short of exceptional.”
After 105 minutes of play, Spain aimed to capitalize on an advantage when Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card in stoppage time during regulation. Despite playing with more players, Spain initially found no success, even having a goal disallowed for a violation by Mikel Merino against Nicolás Otamendi prior to Nico Williams’ shot.
“With the score still 0-0 midway through extra time, Spain seized an opportunity. Argentina, hindered by the expulsion, offered little resistance. A sequence of strategic passes from Pau Cubarsí to Marc Cucurella, Eric García, and Martín Zubimendi brought the ball to Yamal on the right,” de la Fuente praised. “Yamal played impressively at only 19, showing maturity and dedication vital to the team’s success.”
Yamal, after earlier displaying promise, passed to Pedro Porro, who delivered a critical play. Porro facilitated over 130 touches, ultimately creating a turning point with a deep cross for Nico Williams. Williams, entering the game in the 75th minute, expertly redirected the ball to Ferran Torres.
At that moment, de la Fuente recalled Spain’s 2010 World Cup victory through Andrés Iniesta’s goal. Torres, entering the match just after the hour, delivered Spain’s 20th shot with precision, bypassing defenders and Martínez at the 106th minute, granting Spain a 1-0 lead.
Torres shared his elation, emphasizing collective achievement with, “I think at the end of the day, it was a goal scored by 47 million people. I’m very happy. I’ve faced criticism during the World Cup, but destiny favored those who believe it, who deserve it most.” Celebrating with teammates and fans, Torres kicked down the corner flag.
De la Fuente lauded Torres, stating, “I’m so happy for him to have scored this goal. He will make it into history; he has already made history and deserves it.” Despite almost scoring again, Torres was ruled offside.
