Republican Senator John Curtis has called for an investigation into Donald Trump Jr’s international business activities. Curtis’s concerns extend to Trump Jr’s acceptance of gifts, notably a wedding afterparty funded by a Russian oligarch.
In a letter addressed to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday, Curtis highlighted that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev financially supported Trump Jr’s wedding afterparty held on a private island. This occurred shortly after Kremlev reportedly traveled to China with a delegation accompanying Vladimir Putin.
Curtis expressed further worries about Trump Jr’s promotion of family-affiliated cryptocurrency projects and ongoing international real estate negotiations. These negotiations allegedly involved direct interactions with foreign leaders and investment in defense contracting.
These reports raise legitimate questions about foreign access to members of a sitting president’s family and whether such relationships can create actual or perceived expectations of favorable treatment, Curtis stated.
He warned that such relationships could lead to expectations of returned favors, potentially jeopardizing American interests and national security. Curtis urged the committee to investigate the exploitation of private family ties for financial gain, preferential treatment, or influence by domestic and foreign parties.
Additionally, Curtis recommended that the committee subpoena both Trump Jr and Hunter Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden, to discuss their business enterprises. Newsweek has reached out to The Trump Organization for a comment outside of regular office hours.
