Seattle Mariners Manager Dan Wilson Announces Departure

Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson announced Sunday that he will not return for the 2027 season. Wilson informed his team and the media before Game 162 against the Los Angeles Angels. He held a private meeting with players and staff to break the news. He then addressed the public postgame, facing questions before team executives spoke to reporters.

Typically, MLB executives handle these announcements alone, without the manager present. Wilson’s approach is highly unusual in modern sports.

“This season has been very difficult, and the results have not met our expectations,” Wilson stated. “As a result, it’s concluded that today is my last day as manager of the Seattle Mariners.”

Wilson, who became manager in August 2024 and is a former Mariners catcher, expressed his ties to the organization. “I’m still processing this with my family, and it’s a very difficult day,” Wilson said. “We love this city and community and appreciate the organization since 1994.” He feels grateful for the opportunities provided.

The Mariners entered the 2026 season with high hopes. They had won the 2025 AL West title and narrowly missed the World Series after losing in Game 7 of the ALCS. However, in 2026, they finished third place with a 76-86 record.

The downturn was due to offensive struggles, inconsistent pitching, and bullpen issues, along with poor defensive metrics. Comments from players suggested a lack of clubhouse accountability. When questioned about this, Wilson accepted criticism. “Accountability is necessary, and that’s one of the areas we need to look at.”

Sometimes, decisions are made by others in leadership roles. Wilson acknowledged the nature of sports leadership. “I’ve been in baseball a while. Managers take responsibility for what happens.”

Seattle Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto and General Manager Justin Hollander will continue in 2027. Dipoto mentioned that they “failed to meet expectations” and deemed a change in leadership necessary.

Wilson leaves with a managerial record of 187-171 with the Mariners.
