In recent days, NFL running backs have signed substantial contracts, marking a significant financial week for the position. Jahmyr Gibbs, the running back for the Detroit Lions, has finalized a three-year contract worth $67.5 million, featuring $51.5 million guaranteed. Agent Todd France confirmed the deal on Instagram. Gibbs will earn an NFL-leading $22.5 million annually.
Falcons’ Contract with Bijan Robinson
Earlier, the Atlanta Falcons signed Bijan Robinson to a contract averaging $22.25 million annually. This follows Jonathan Taylor’s agreement with the Indianapolis Colts for a two-year extension at $22 million per year. All these deals surpass Saquon Barkley’s contract, which averaged $20.6 million per season and was a standard since 2025.
Gibbs has significantly impacted the role of running backs in Detroit, with comparisons being made to Barry Sanders’ 1990s performances. In his first three seasons, Gibbs scored 39 rushing and 10 receiving touchdowns, leading the league with 20 total touchdowns from scrimmage in 2024.
Lions Invest in Talent
The Detroit Lions have been extending contracts to their drafted talent, including Aidan Hutchinson, Jack Campbell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and other key players. After ending a 32-year playoff victory drought in 2023 and reaching the NFC championship game, the Lions continue to focus on developing their roster.
Despite success in player development and winning the NFC North, a Super Bowl victory remains elusive for Detroit. Nevertheless, the franchise has invested over $800 million in contract commitments for its players, indicating their ambition to secure a championship.
The Lions aim to achieve the Super Bowl success they have financially prepared for, hoping to capitalize on their talented roster.
