Samsung has expanded its range of foldable devices, now offering three distinct models to cater to different users. Previously, the lineup included only the book-style Fold and the clamshell Flip. This change was announced during the Galaxy Unpacked event in London, marking a shift in strategy by targeting diverse consumer needs.
Three Unique Foldable Devices
The new Galaxy Z Fold8 is designed for media enthusiasts. It weighs 201g, making it the lightest in the Galaxy Z line. Its dual-display system allows for various activities; the 10:16 cover screen is tailored for social and messaging content, while the 4:3 main display is optimal for gaming and video. It features a 4,800mAh battery and dual 50MP cameras. The starting price is £1,699 for the 256GB model.
The Fold8 Ultra stands out with its professional-grade features. Unfolded, it’s just 4.1mm thick and weighs 215g. Its main display, measuring 8.0 inches, is Samsung’s widest for a foldable. The camera system is advanced, boasting a 200MP main sensor, accompanied by a 50MP ultra-wide and a 10MP 3x telephoto lens. The device includes a 5,000mAh battery and supports 45W charging. It can shoot 8K video using the APV codec, priced at £1,899.
The Flip8 targets those prioritizing portability and style. It weighs 180g and measures 6.1mm unfolded. Equipped with an Exynos 2600 chip, its highlight is the FlexWindow, a 4.1-inch AI-native cover display providing personalized information. It includes a 50MP main camera and is priced at £1,149.
Market Timing and Strategy
The release of three devices addresses an anticipated 21% growth in the foldable market by 2026, according to Counterpoint Research. However, Samsung’s market share might decline to 32% as Apple plans to launch its foldable iPhone.
Counterpoint’s Liz Lee believes Apple’s entry will enhance consumer awareness and raise the standards for premium foldables. Samsung relies on its product maturity, extensive channels, and experience with foldables to maintain its position.
High-end book-style foldables, priced at $1,600 or more, might comprise 60% of shipments by late 2026. Samsung’s introduction of the Ultra tier anticipates consumers’ willingness to invest more in luxury technology.
Availability and Features
All three devices are available for pre-order and will be generally available from August 7. They come with a six-month Google AI Pro trial and 5TB of cloud storage. Samsung has enhanced the Smart Switch for a seamless transition from iOS devices without an app download, using a simple QR code scan. The compatibility of Quick Share with AirDrop adds convenience for users switching ecosystems.
The market will soon assess whether offering three foldable models is more effective than two, with each device intended to fulfill specific consumer expectations.
