Google Enhances Search with New Gemini AI Model

Google is implementing a significant change to its search capabilities by introducing a new artificial intelligence model, Gemini 3.5 Flash. The update modifies the iconic search box for the first time since 2001. This change is driven by the need to accommodate increasingly complex searches made possible by artificial intelligence.

Traditionally, Google’s search box was a simple, long bar designed for straightforward keyword queries. Now, with advancements in AI, users often type in longer, more detailed questions. For example, where they may have once searched for “World Cup,” users can now ask, “Who are the top 24 teams in the World Cup and what chance does the United States have of advancing?”

New Features and Tools

The revamped search box is larger and more interactive, allowing people to input even longer questions. Users can now upload photos and videos directly into queries, enhancing the search functionality. Google also introduces a chatbot on its main search page, enabling users to ask follow-up questions seamlessly.

Google is not stopping there. New features include digital assistants, or agents, that can automate searches. For instance, someone looking for an apartment can receive notifications of new listings without visiting sites like Zillow.

Gemini 3.5 Flash Model

The updated search features are powered by the Gemini 3.5 Flash model. According to Google, this model significantly enhances the creation of software code and the execution of autonomous tasks. It operates faster and is more cost-effective than previous models.

Google’s Chief Executive, Sundar Pichai, emphasizes that the speed and affordability of the Gemini model enable Google to offer these features to a broader audience. This strategic move is expected to provide long-term benefits for the company.
