Russia launched a ballistic missile assault on Kyiv early Thursday, leading to numerous explosions across the city. This information comes from Ukrainian officials. Kyiv’s Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, urged residents to seek shelter as explosions shook the area. A witness cited by Reuters reported hearing multiple detonations.

The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that Russia targeted the capital with ballistic missiles. Earlier, Kyiv experienced its deadliest strike since May, as Russia unleashed nearly 600 missiles and drones on the city. Following the strikes, several non-residential sites reportedly caught fire, but there have been no immediate reports of casualties.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously warned of a potential major overnight assault by Russia. He mentioned receiving a report from Air Force Commander Anatolii Kryvonozhko, indicating a massive attack had been prepared days prior. Zelenskyy emphasized the high probability of the assault happening overnight.

During the attack, people took shelter in overcrowded metro stations. Zelenskyy stressed the necessity for international partners to comprehend the situation fully. He noted that the protection of lives hinges on their readiness to assist with air defense missiles.

The Ukrainian leader made this appeal after returning from meetings in the United States with President Donald Trump. Trump recently announced at a NATO summit in Turkey that the U.S. would license Ukraine to manufacture Patriot air defense systems.

Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of involving the United States and other partners who possess Patriot missiles to strengthen Ukraine’s defense. He iterated that every partner should understand what is required and the consequences of any delay in support.
