Pope Leo XIV Addresses Polarization in Spain

Pope Leo XIV urged Spaniards to cease encouraging polarization during his visit to Spain amidst political unrest and a credibility crisis for the Catholic Church. The American pope, with Spanish roots, has a longstanding connection to Spain, having visited frequently as a priest. This marks the first papal visit to Spain in 15 years, signaling a renewed papal focus on Europe’s Christian heritage.

Visit to Promote Peace and Unity

Leo aims to promote peace, unity, and respect for human dignity in a divided Europe. The continent faces challenges over migration, the war in Ukraine, and the rise of artificial intelligence. Starting his weeklong visit in Madrid, he was welcomed by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. The pope expressed encouragement over reports of a spiritual resurgence among young Spaniards.

Pope Leo XIV arrived at Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas International Airport for his apostolic journey. His visit coincides with political strife within the Socialist-led government, compounded by issues within the Church.

Speaking Against Division

In his welcome speech, Leo urged Spanish leaders to forsake divisive rhetoric and focus on educating young citizens about diversity and complexity. He highlighted the growing issue of gaining popularity by promoting division and urged for a return to Europe’s Christian roots. The pope referenced Spain’s historical role as a center for religious and cultural dialogue.

Pope Leo XIV stated, “For the love of truth, I invite everyone to set aside the divisive and polarizing narratives of your societal reality and history.”

He emphasized the importance of overcoming societal divisions such as those around immigration, feminism, and political corruption.

Upcoming Address to Parliament

The highlight of Leo’s visit will be his historic address to the Spanish Parliament, a rarity for any pope, anticipated to have significant impact. The political climate remains tense, with the ruling Socialist party facing corruption allegations and opposition parties critical of current migration policies. The Socialist-led administration has chosen to legalize many unauthorized immigrants, citing economic benefits in light of an aging population and declining birthrate.

Spiritual Interest Among Young Spaniards

Despite facing protests, Leo’s visit marks a significant event for the Spanish Catholic Church, which has endured crises of credibility due to abuse scandals. Since becoming a democracy, Spain has seen a decline in declared Catholics, dropping from 90% in the 1970s to 55% by 2025, with only a fraction attending Mass regularly. Nevertheless, sociologist Narciso Michavila Núñez notes a resurgence in spiritual interest among younger Spaniards.

Figures like Spanish pop star Rosalía, whose album “Lux” embraces spirituality, reflect a broader cultural shift. Michavila observes that spirituality is becoming more prevalent in the lives of Spanish youth.
