Voters in California’s 14th Congressional District are set to decide the winner of a runoff election. This election follows the resignation of Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) due to allegations of sexual assault and misconduct. The district is located in a section of Alameda County within the Bay Area.
Both candidates in the runoff are Democrats. The seat will remain with the Democratic Party. State Sen. Aisha Wahab received 42.8% of the vote in the initial round held in June. Her opponent, former Dublin Mayor Melissa Hernandez, garnered 16.8% in the same contest.
Wahab is identified with progressive policies. In contrast, Hernandez is seen as more moderate. The race has attracted attention and financial support from political action committees. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and another super PAC opposing AIPAC’s influence have invested in this election. The involvement of AIPAC in Democratic primaries has sparked debates.
The polls will close at 11 p.m. EDT. Voters and political analysts are closely monitoring the live election results.
