Rosie O’Donnell Opens Up About Her Facelift Journey

Rosie O’Donnell, known for her comedic talent and outspoken personality, recently shared her decision to undergo a facelift. This marks a significant shift for O’Donnell, who previously opposed cosmetic surgery.

In a heartfelt essay on Substack, O’Donnell wrote about her struggles with guilt and shame following the surgery. She described her past stance on facelifts as a moral decision, aligning it with her feminist beliefs. Losing 50 pounds prompted her to reconsider.

“I used to feel very strongly about facelifts. Not casually—morally. I had assigned myself as head of all women who would never—ever. I thought it was a betrayal. Of feminism. Of aging. Of our team of women worldwide. And then I lost 50 pounds,” O’Donnell wrote.

She explained that the decision was not about wrinkles, but about how gravity affected her appearance. As she reflected, she began questioning whether accepting aging meant lying to herself.

O’Donnell’s decision faced opposition from her 13-year-old child, Clay. Clay’s comments about earned wrinkles and respect made a profound impact on her. These remarks echoed O’Donnell’s younger self-judging her appearance.

“Then my 13-year-old child found out. ‘You earned your wrinkles,'” she recounted. “And finally—’I wouldn’t be able to respect you if you did it.’ That one… landed.”

The intense family discussion led O’Donnell to delay the procedure. She then realized she wanted to teach Clay that her body wasn’t bound to ideals, including feminism.

After months of contemplation, O’Donnell proceeded with the facelift in January. She desired to look like herself but felt less haunted.

“I wanted a limit. I wanted to still be me, just… less haunted,” she wrote. “And I do look like me—a slightly more well-rested, emotionally stable version of me.”

Interestingly, the changes went largely unnoticed, even by her daughter. This outcome satisfied O’Donnell, who believes her appearance remained authentic.

Despite achieving her intended look, O’Donnell grappled with feelings of guilt over the procedure’s cost, more than any car she had purchased. She reflected on her privilege and the excess her lifestyle sometimes represents.

As she navigates life at 64, with a renewed appearance, O’Donnell embraces her experiences and uses her voice to connect with others. Her story highlights the complexities surrounding personal choices and societal expectations.
