Northwest Indiana’s dedicated Rocky Horror cast is gearing up for their Saturday performance, despite the recent passing of Tim Curry. Curry famously embodied the film’s main character, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. John Davey, leader of the Rocky Horror in Abundance, expressed disbelief over Curry’s death, praising his influence on his life.
Tim Curry first portrayed Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1973 London stage production of ‘The Rocky Horror Show.’ He captured audiences with his role, solidifying his legacy in the 1975 film adaptation. Curry’s career spanned numerous genres, featuring roles in ‘Clue,’ ‘Muppet Treasure Island,’ ‘Annie,’ and ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.’ He was well-known for his portrayal of Pennywise in the 1990 miniseries of Stephen King’s ‘It,’ earning him three Tony nominations, including one for ‘Amadeus’ in 1980.
Curry passed at age 80 on August 25, after suffering a stroke in 2012. He once shared with The Associated Press his fascination with unique human behavior, saying he preferred playing such roles due to their intriguing nature.
Davey launched the first Rocky Horror shadowcast in Northwest Indiana in 1992. During these traditional showings, costumed cast members perform alongside the movie, encouraging audience participation with props. The group, now called Rocky Horror in Abundance, performs at Avenue 912 in Griffith. This Saturday’s show will see a unique Spongebob-themed crossover, where the cast has been preparing new costumes and props.
Reflecting on Curry’s death, Holly Schulz from Rocky Horror in Abundance highlighted plans for a tribute during the performance. Tickets priced at $12 can be bought at the venue or online. The next special tribute event to Curry is scheduled for September 24.
Ryan “T.R.” Mix, a senior member of the cast, reflected on the enduring passion for Rocky Horror, attributing it to Curry’s legacy and community support. Mix mentioned how Curry’s portrayal inspires performers and fosters a sense of belonging. He recalled Curry’s emotional response at a convention to seeing the lasting impact of Rocky Horror on its fans.
Curry’s interactions with fans convinced him to pen his memoir ‘Vagabond,’ sharing personal stories that resonate with diverse audiences and inspire confidence. Davey, deeply moved by a midnight viewing of Rocky Horror during his youth, embraced the inclusive counter-culture it presented. His personal transformation included wearing costumes made by his mother, which boosted his confidence.
The Rocky Horror troupe has performed at various venues over the years. Currently, at Avenue 912, the group aims to continue honoring Tim Curry’s legacy. Schulz emphasized Curry’s lasting impact, fostering authenticity in others through his roles.
