New York Magazine’s Inaugural Men’s Style Issue Features Elliot Page

New York Magazine has released its first men’s style issue, choosing transgender actor Elliot Page, a biological female, for the cover. The issue, titled “The Men’s Style Issue,” reflects the publication’s historical focus on men’s fashion.

The magazine noted its past coverage, including a 1971 story on high heels for men and a 1996 feature on male supermodels. Since 2006, men’s fashion was often included in the women’s fashion issue, showcasing figures like Thom Browne. Recently, trends such as high-priced Chrome Hearts jeans indicate a timely focus on men’s style.

The issues explores influential figures in menswear and the changing dynamics in the fashion world, hinting at novel trends like men in sarongs. Elliot Page, who claims his acting career slowed post-transition, appears prominently. He reflected on masculinity, sharing his bathhouse experiences, “I went to a bathhouse recently…I do sing in the shower sometimes,” he said.

Critics from media and political spheres weighed in. Link Lauren, a commentator, criticized the choice to feature Page. He argued that masculinity is often marginalized in media, stating, “There is a shortage of masculinity in mainstream media…they care about clicks.” He questioned New York Magazine’s motives, suggesting the cover was designed for controversy.

Tim Graham from NewsBusters shared similar sentiments. “These New York Magazine people can’t figure out who is a man and who is a woman,” he stated. Graham suggested the magazine’s approach mirrors Glamour’s past features, framing it as an attempt for progressive recognition.
