Republican critics are voicing concerns over sanctuary policies, arguing they complicate the work of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. This follows an incident in New Jersey where an illegal immigrant, fleeing ICE, caused a crash on a highway, injuring the wife of a Democratic mayor.
The crash on Wednesday has intensified debates about New Jersey’s policies, which limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Republicans claim that the ‘Trust Directive’, supported by Governor Sherrill, puts public safety at risk by hampering ICE operations.
Assemblyman Paul Kanitra from Point Pleasant Beach remarked, “This incident is one of many that could have been avoided if New Jersey hadn’t adopted its sanctuary status, implemented by Gov. Sherrill.” He criticized Democrats for their stance, suggesting they avoid accountability when such incidents occur.
Kanitra cited other local incidents involving illegal immigrants, including one where an immigrant allegedly drove into a family, resulting in the death of an infant. “These tragedies are a consequence of sanctuary policies,” he claimed.
In this latest incident, the suspect sped onto U.S. 130, a busy highway, and collided with a Tesla after ignoring a traffic signal. The injured parties included the wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen. During the pursuit, ICE officers attempted a safe apprehension following standard procedures.
Senator Mike Testa from Vineland emphasized the importance of interagency cooperation agreements like 287(g) for public safety. Despite resistance from Democratic leadership, he argues these agreements are critical.
Reacting to the incident, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman advocated for abolishing ICE, blaming the chase itself rather than the driver. This comment was met with criticism from Testa, who called for accountability from those breaking immigration laws.
Testa expressed disappointment with current policies, advocating for agreements that enhance law enforcement collaboration. He underscores the belief that U.S. citizenship should entail specific privileges, highlighting the need for controlled immigration.
