The Detroit-area seat presents unique dynamics, making McKinney’s victory more complex than other progressive primary successes this election cycle. McKinney, a democratic socialist, ran on a progressive platform. His priorities included ‘Medicare for All,’ imposing new restrictions on military aid to Israel, and advocating for significant investments in clean energy and housing.
Thanedar narrowly secured the seat in 2022 after financing his campaign. However, he has faced scrutiny since then. Initially, Thanedar ran as a progressive but severed ties with the Democratic Socialists of America in 2023. While he claims he resigned, the local chapter asserts he was expelled. Thanedar has since rebranded, focusing on support for Israel.
Thanedar received criticism from Democrats for proposing Trump’s impeachment without party leadership’s backing. Yet, he managed to secure endorsements from figures like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other prominent House Democrats. His campaign finances have also drawn attention due to a reported $2 million loss linked to cryptocurrency investments. Additionally, Thanedar spent significant taxpayer money on ads that resembled campaign ads.
McKinney announced his Congressional bid 16 months before the primary. He emphasized his personal story of overcoming poverty and being the first in his family to attend college. McKinney argued that his legislative work demonstrated his potential for effectiveness and assertiveness from the start.
Thanedar’s issues, coupled with broader Democratic voter frustration with the party establishment, contributed to McKinney’s success. He received support from Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and other well-known progressives like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Rashida Tlaib. Organizations such as Justice Democrats and Leaders We Deserve backed McKinney as part of a movement challenging incumbents nationwide.
