Rain Delays and Roof Sensor Failure at Louis Armstrong Stadium

Rain affected play at the Louis Armstrong Stadium during the U.S. Open due to a roof sensor issue. This delay led to high sales of the Honey Deuce drink.

On Sunday night, a combination of rain and a brief roof malfunction caused long beverage lines at the stadium. This is the second-largest court at the tournament.

The weather was initially pleasant but humid. The night session began after 7 p.m. ET, featuring matches on both Armstrong and Arthur Ashe Stadium. Elina Svitolina, the No. 9 seed, quickly defeated Solana Sierra from Argentina with a score of 6-1, 6-2. This set the stage for an early start for the match between No. 15 seed Alexander Bublik and American wild card J.J. Wolf.

However, approximately 20 minutes after Svitolina’s match ended, rain began. Matches on outside courts paused. Armstrong and Ashe should have been protected by the closing roofs.

Unfortunately, a problem with the roof sensors on Armstrong left the court exposed to rain. A USTA spokesperson explained that the roof remained open due to a mechanical sensor issue. This caused Bublik and Wolf to start their match 90 minutes later than scheduled, after the roof eventually closed and the court was dried.

Fans cheered when the roof finally closed. The concession lines, which had grown during the wait, decreased, and the match commenced around 9:30 p.m. By 9:45 p.m. ET, one bar reported running low on melon balls.
