Colorado Rockies rookie center fielder Cole Carrigg faced backlash after making an inappropriate gesture toward Atlanta Braves fans during a game at Truist Park. The incident occurred as the Rockies were holding a 1-0 lead and Carrigg failed to catch a fly ball from Michael Harris II, resulting in a two-run double for Atlanta.
As the home crowd reacted, Carrigg responded by flipping off the fans. Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer addressed the situation publicly, denouncing Carrigg’s actions. Schaeffer announced that the rookie would not be in the starting lineup for the next few games. He stated, “Cole made a mistake, and he knows that is an embarrassment to the organization and that we don’t stand for that. Everybody makes mistakes. It is just one that he has to learn from.”
Despite being benched for Sunday’s game, Carrigg appeared as a pinch hitter, ending 0-for-2 with a strikeout. He later took positions in center field and shortstop. Carrigg expressed remorse afterward, apologizing to his teammates and acknowledging the lapse in judgment was unacceptable.
He added, “I apologize to my teammates and the organization, that’s not how I want to represent us. That’s inexcusable on my part. I’m somebody who’s going to play at 110 percent every game and give my all to this team to win ballgames. That play was important, and I’m passionate about it.”
While Carrigg showed frustration, he also recognized the passion of Braves fans, admitting the gesture was wrong. This incident highlights the importance of professionalism, even in high-pressure situations.
