A young boy from Thomasville, Georgia, faced a sudden emergency situation while playing outside with his siblings. Rolin, a 2-year-old, experienced rapid facial swelling after encountering a fire ant mound. His parents, Lexi and Cody Johnson, acted swiftly to address the alarming situation.

Lexi explained their quick response to Newsweek. “I rushed him to the bathroom tub and immediately ran cold water on him,” she said. The situation escalated quickly, leaving no time for hesitation.

Fire ants often inhabit the southern United States. Although their bites usually cause mild discomfort, the venom can sometimes trigger a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis.

While Cody stayed with Rolin, Lexi contacted the pediatrician for guidance. However, even before she could finish the call, Rolin’s condition worsened. “His face was swollen with a bunch of bumps,” Lexi reported. The urgency to get Rolin to the emergency room was clear.

With their other children cared for by a relative, Lexi and Cody rushed Rolin to the hospital. During the car ride, Lexi grew increasingly anxious as Rolin became quiet. She tried to keep him responsive, saying, “Rolin, it’s going to be okay. Stay with me.”

Upon arrival at the emergency department, the severity of Rolin’s situation was quickly recognized. Medical staff provided prompt treatment, including epinephrine, steroids, and antihistamines. Lexi stayed by her son’s side to comfort him during this critical time.

This event was particularly surprising for the family, as Rolin previously had no allergic reactions to ant bites. “Living in the South, we are more cautious now,” Lexi shared. She emphasized the challenge of spotting ant mounds, even with consistent pest control efforts.

Rolin has since fully recovered and resumed his usual activities outdoors. Lexi shared their story on Instagram, leading to widespread attention and nearly 7 million views. Despite some criticism about the incident, Lexi stressed that such dangers are not always easily avoided.

She advises other parents to trust their instincts in similar situations. “Trust your judgment if [something] feels wrong,” Lexi urged. Her quick actions were crucial, particularly given their proximity to medical assistance.
