Two individuals, both masked, climbed atop the Empire State Building at midday on Wednesday, showcasing a banner with the message, “when the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.” The New York City Police Department’s (NYPD) Emergency Services Unit responded promptly. The pair eventually removed the banner and descended from the antenna to a lower platform.
One of the individuals then retrieved an engagement ring from a backpack, knelt, and proposed. They were subsequently taken into custody, with charges pending, according to NYPD officials. Fortunately, no injuries occurred. Details remain sparse on how those involved were able to ascend the building.
Approximately 40 officers positioned themselves in front of the skyscraper, while others managed traffic around the area. The entrance on Fifth Ave., between West 33rd and 34th streets, was obstructed. Many pedestrians gathered at surrounding corners to watch the situation develop.
The Empire State Building, inclusive of its spire and antenna, reaches 1,454 feet in height. It presently ranks as the fourth-tallest building in New York City, the sixth in the U.S., and stands as the 43rd tallest globally.
No official statement has been made by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani regarding the incident. Fox News Digital reached out to his office for comment, but there has been no immediate response.
