Columbus Faces Criticism for Somali Flag Raising

The city of Columbus, Ohio, home to a significant Somali population, is under scrutiny due to the celebration of Somali Independence Day. The Columbus Rec & Parks department posted on social media, acknowledging the unification of Somaliland regions into the Somali Republic in 1960 and announcing a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall.

This announcement prompted a swift reaction from conservative voices on social media. The timing of the celebration, so close to the 250th anniversary of American independence, intensified the debate. Stephen Miller, White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy, commented on the celebration’s proximity to America’s historic milestone.

Critics, including journalist Mark Hemingway, argue that American government buildings should not display foreign flags. Attorney Mehek Cooke expressed concern over perceived anti-American sentiment, suggesting that foreign nationalism is being celebrated at the expense of national pride.

Skeptics, such as ACT for America founder Brigitte Gabriel, view the flag-raising as a cultural concession. Concerns were also voiced by Daily Wire reporter Luke Rosiak and Federalist reporter Brianna Lyman. They questioned the appropriateness of celebrating Somalian historical events given the upcoming American anniversary.

Ohio State Representative Brian Stewart also addressed issues surrounding assimilation, noting potential negative implications of the celebration.

Fox News Digital sought a comment from city officials. Reporter Andrew Mark Miller covered the unfolding story on social media and is available for contact via email.
