The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington has faced significant issues since its renovation. Initially, the pool was lined with a color President Donald Trump termed ‘American flag blue.’ However, its current appearance is more gray than blue, as noted by an Associated Press observation from the Washington Monument.

The Reflecting Pool’s revamp has been plagued by complications. Initially set for completion by July 4 for the nation’s 250th birthday, the project far exceeded the original $1.5 million budget, costing over $16 million. Ohio-based Green Water Solutions was contracted for $1.7 million to install a water purification system, while Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings received $14.7 million to repaint and waterproof the pool.

President Trump had promised the repairs would endure for a century.

Despite assurances of lasting repairs, issues emerged quickly. Algae blooms appeared in the water, and the new coating began peeling. Trump blamed vandalism, claiming, without evidence, that vandals had caused significant damage. No visible large cuts were detected by observers.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated the plan involved repairing the damage and refilling the pool. Court documents revealed a June 9 incident, where a sharp object allegedly damaged the pool’s new liner. David Hearn, a former Olympic canoeist, pleaded not guilty to charges of damaging the Reflecting Pool. His attorneys argue the case is a misuse of prosecutorial power, claiming Hearn is unfairly targeted for faulty repairs.

Besides Hearn, three others faced charges for allegedly removing paint pieces. All pleaded not guilty. The Reflecting Pool renovation is one of several projects President Trump initiated, including demolishing the White House’s East Wing for a $400 million ballroom and planning an arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
