Tropical activities are being monitored in the Atlantic, indicating the possibility of another named storm forming this season. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) identified two areas with potential for tropical cyclone development. Currently, one region has a 70% likelihood of forming a cyclone within the week.

The NHC reported that environmental conditions would become favorable for development soon, likely leading to a tropical depression as the system progresses across the central tropical Atlantic.

If the system transforms into a named storm, it would be known as Cristobal, marking it the third named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. According to AccuWeather meteorologist Nick Arman, the system might achieve the strength of a tropical depression or a low-level tropical storm. However, the warm Atlantic waters might help it intensify, potentially reaching hurricane strength, although this remains improbable at present.

Potential U.S. Impacts

Arman mentioned that the system must overcome various challenges to affect the United States directly or indirectly. As it nears the northern Lesser Antilles over the weekend into the upcoming week, wind shear may restrict its intensification. Furthermore, wind shear may entirely weaken the system near the islands.

A stronger system might veer north toward the open Atlantic, avoiding any significant interaction with the U.S. Conversely, a weaker wave could approach the Southeast coast, facing considerable disruption from wind shear.

Any potential impact on the U.S. wouldn’t occur before the middle or later next week. For now, the risk of impact appears minimal, offering forecasters enough time to observe developments.

Monitoring Additional Disturbance

Current observations also include a second disturbance with low development risk. A trough of low pressure, located northeast of Bermuda, might develop marginally over the next few days. However, cooler water temperatures by Thursday will likely inhibit further development.
