Tokuda aims to secure a third term for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District. This district covers areas outside Oahu and includes rural and suburban parts of the island. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates this district as D+12, indicating a strong Democratic presence.

The upcoming 2026 midterm elections are unfolding with key races across the country. In Michigan, Democrats Stevens and El-Sayed are in a significant contest. Tokuda’s Democratic peers have faced intense primary battles, with some incumbents losing their seats. Representative Ed Case, a fellow Hawaiian Democrat, also encountered a tough challenge from a more progressive opponent.

Despite these challenges, Tokuda won the Democratic nomination without much difficulty. She overcame three primary competitors, none of whom significantly threatened her campaign. However, her race wasn’t free from controversy.

Controversial Incident

An incident at Keawakapu Beach involved one of Tokuda’s longshot challengers, Kirill Basin. Basin was arrested following a violent confrontation that was captured on video and reported by Honolulu Civil Beat. The clash began when Basin allegedly threatened a man for requesting lower music volume. A bystander intervened, resulting in Basin reportedly producing a knife.

Tokuda addressed the incident, describing it as “disturbing” in a statement to Hawaii News Now. She emphasized the importance of accountability, stating that anyone, whether a candidate or a private citizen, should be responsible for their actions.
