Pope Leo XIV addressed Americans virtually from the Vatican on Friday, urging them to recognize the United States’ heritage of welcoming immigrants. His remarks came as he accepted the 2026 Liberty Medal from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, recognizing his dedication to religious freedom.

The Pope highlighted the past 250 years where America became synonymous with liberty, largely due to welcoming immigrants who contributed to shaping the country’s future. He emphasized the Declaration of Independence’s assertion of fundamental rights such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, citing its importance for all.

As the first American Pope, Leo expressed his hopes for America’s continued adherence to these ideals, saying, “As a son of this great country, founded by those seeking liberty and a better future, I join you in seeking God’s blessings for America’s future.” He encouraged the nation to continue flourishing in unity, justice, and peace.

During his virtual speech from Vatican City, Pope Leo also called attention to the moral responsibility of nations to protect and support those most vulnerable, reinforcing his advocacy for the rights of immigrants and migrants. Since becoming Pope in 2025, he has consistently supported such causes.

Following his address, the Pope visited Lampedusa, a key entry point for migrants entering Europe. There, he urged both Europe and the world to welcome more migrants effectively. He described the plight of migrants harmed by traffickers, stressing the need for comprehensive policies, and the significance of aiding countries of origin to prevent forced emigration.

He appealed to Europeans to address the migrant crisis strategically, integrating immediate aid with long-term solutions. Pope Leo criticized indifference and isolationism, calling for a change in mindset towards a humanitarian approach.

Pope Leo’s views on immigration and war frequently clash with Western leaders, notably President Donald Trump. Trump has criticized the Pope’s stance on foreign policy, labeling him as unsuccessful in the area. Vice President JD Vance, a fellow Catholic, also expressed disapproval of the Pope’s actions.
