The New England Patriots faced a tough defeat against the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL’s season-opening game, ending with a 13-10 loss. Despite being on the cusp of an upset win, the Patriots couldn’t secure the victory.
During the fourth quarter, quarterback Drake Maye led an attempted game-winning drive. The Patriots had a chance to either score a touchdown for the win or tie the game with a field goal to reach overtime. Maye’s end zone pass was intercepted, bringing the Patriots’ chances to an abrupt halt.
After the game, Maye addressed the media, accepting responsibility for the crucial interception. He admitted to losing patience and making decisions that negatively impacted the team. Maye stressed the importance of improving his game moving forward.
I lost patience, and it cost us. Decisions that cost us the game on my part. It’s a long season, but at the same time, you can’t have those; it’s unacceptable. I gotta get back to work, because that wasn’t how I play football,Maye stated.
Maye’s intercepted pass came with only 21 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Attempting to connect with a teammate in the corner of the end zone, Seahawks’ Josh Jobe intercepted the pass, sealing Seattle’s victory.
Throughout the game, Maye completed 23 of 33 passes totaling 178 yards, and threw one touchdown pass to rookie Eli Raridon. His performance, however, was marred by three interceptions, as Seattle’s defense proved formidable.
The matchup seemed favorable for the Patriots initially. Seahawks’ quarterback Sam Darnold, a past Super Bowl winner, exited due to injury in the first quarter. Backup Drew Lock stepped in to fill the role. Although Darnold’s injury doesn’t appear severe, there remains no official timeline for his return.
Following this season-opening defeat, Maye and the Patriots must regroup as they prepare to face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Sept. 20. This upcoming AFC clash will feature Maye and Aaron Rodgers.
