One of baseball’s greatest pitchers, Justin Verlander, will retire after the 2026 season. The three-time Cy Young Award winner declared his decision on Wednesday amidst a challenging season with the Detroit Tigers afflicted by injuries.
Verlander expressed that this season tested him physically and mentally in ways he hadn’t experienced before. He remarked, “I’ve always believed that as long as I could compete at the level I expect of myself, I’d keep playing. I never wanted to retire because of a milestone, a number, or a date on the calendar. I wanted the game to tell me when it was time. Over the last several months, I’ve realized that time has come.”
Though committed to giving his all this season, Verlander stated, “It’s fitting that I get to finish where it all started – with the Detroit Tigers, the organization that drafted me and gave me my first opportunity.” After being drafted, Verlander spent his first 12½ seasons with the Tigers before a trade to the Houston Astros, where he achieved significant milestones.
In Houston, he won both of his World Series titles and two Cy Young Awards. He cited baseball’s role in teaching discipline, resilience, and adaptability. “I’ve been fortunate to play with and against incredible players, for outstanding organizations, and compete in front of fans who deeply appreciate the game,” he added.
Verlander thanked those involved in his career, including teammates, coaches, and his family, especially his wife, Kate, for unwavering support.
Throughout his career, Verlander amassed 3,554 strikeouts, placing him eighth all-time and close to surpassing other legends like Don Sutton and Tom Seaver. Starting his career in 2005, Verlander took home the American League Rookie of the Year Award and remained a top contender in pitching stats.
Verlander’s exemplary 2022 season featured a career-best 1.75 ERA and 0.829 WHIP, following Tommy John surgery recovery. His accolades include his first Cy Young and MVP Awards in 2011 and another Cy Young in 2019. Verlander led the majors multiple times in innings, WHIP, and strikeouts, solidifying his legacy.
He looks forward to finishing strong, saying, “It’s time for the next chapter. But first, I’m excited to finish this season the only way I know how – with everything I’ve got.” As his career concludes, Verlander is seen as a potential unanimous Hall of Fame inductee, joining the ranks of Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera.
