Pakistani Court Sentences Two Men in Teenager’s Killing

A Pakistani court sentenced a U.S. citizen and his Pakistani brother-in-law to life imprisonment for killing the American’s daughter. The crime involved a young New Yorker named Hira Anwar.

Hira Anwar, a 14-year-old girl from Yonkers, was fatally shot in January 2025. She had been brought to Pakistan, supposedly for a family vacation, and was killed outside her family home in Quetta, Balochistan.

Hira’s father, Anwar-ul-Haq, a naturalized U.S. citizen and New York City Uber driver, initially claimed that unidentified gunmen were responsible. However, police investigations revealed that the killing was premeditated and orchestrated by him. Anwar-ul-Haq, also known as Anwar-ul-Haq Rajpoot, conspired with relatives to execute the plan.

At her school in Yonkers, Hira was outgoing and active on social media. She posted TikTok videos featuring popular musicians like Zayn Malik and Chase Atlantic. Teachers noted her desire for independence and freedom.

“Her father viewed her behavior as a source of shame,” prosecutors argued, emphasizing his disapproval of her Western lifestyle.

Prosecutors demonstrated that Mr. ul-Haq was particularly disturbed by her online activity and interactions with boys. This disapproval escalated into a plan leading to her death.

The court found that Mr. ul-Haq had convinced family members in Pakistan to aid in the killing after luring Hira there. The ruling highlighted the shared criminal intent between him and his accomplices.
