Oklahoma City Thunder Strengthens Roster by Drafting Aday Mara

The Oklahoma City Thunder made a strategic move in the 2026 NBA draft by selecting Aday Mara, a standout center from Michigan, with their No. 12 overall pick. This decision follows their recent NBA championship win in 2025 and another strong performance reaching the Western Conference Finals this season.

Aday Mara, standing 7-foot-3 and weighing 260 pounds, had a significant impact during his time at Michigan. He averaged 12.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 2.6 blocks per game, while maintaining a field goal percentage of 66.8%. His impressive performance earned him the title of Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, All-Big Ten honors, and he played a vital role in securing the national championship for the Wolverines.

Mara’s addition is particularly notable in light of the Thunder’s competition in the Western Conference. While their trio of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren proved difficult for teams to counter, they faced a significant challenge from the San Antonio Spurs and their formidable lineup featuring Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper. Other teams like the Lakers, Nuggets, Rockets, Clippers, and Timberwolves remain competitive, but San Antonio posed the greatest obstacle for Oklahoma City in the postseason.

Expectations are high for Mara as he joins the Thunder. Although stopping an extraordinary talent like Wembanyama might be premature, Mara’s size, defensive capabilities, and potential from beyond the arc make him a valuable asset. If he can refine his 3-point shooting, Mara could prove to be a crucial draft selection for Oklahoma City.
