An armed individual attacked Amy Acton, the Democratic candidate for Ohio governor, during a campaign visit to the Canfield Fair on Sunday. Several people suffered injuries in the incident, according to campaign officials.
The suspect, arrested with multiple weapons, reportedly charged through the crowd, knocking down volunteers. Amy Acton, though unharmed, expressed gratitude for law enforcement’s quick response. “This kind of violence has no place in Ohio,” declared Addie Bullock, the campaign’s communications director.
The attacker pushed through the crowd, knocking down an elderly gentleman who hit his head. Law enforcement immediately detained the suspect, revealing brass knuckles and a firearm, said Wayne Penny Jr., a Democratic candidate for Ohio’s 59th State House District.
Republican opponent Vivek Ramaswamy condemned the attack. “Candidates should meet voters without fear of threats. Today’s violence is unacceptable,” his communications director stated.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine echoed these sentiments, voicing relief that Acton was safe. Authorities have yet to release full details. The fairground’s police redirected inquiries to the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department, which has not responded to requests for comments.
Amy Acton, once Ohio’s public health director, is challenging Vivek Ramaswamy, who leverages his tech ties and alliance with former President Donald Trump in the race. Campaign efforts continue as security concerns grow amid increased political tensions.
