Kamala Harris Signals Progressive Shift for Potential 2028 Bid

Kamala Harris is focusing her attention on progressive groups, indicating a possible 2028 presidential run. She aims to mend ties with the far-left, including pro-Palestinian groups and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, while navigating party divisions.

Recently, Harris has endorsed several progressive policy proposals she did not campaign on during the 2024 election. Speaking at the National Urban League Conference in Nashville, she supported expanding the Supreme Court and abolishing the Electoral College. “We must allow for a real conversation about revisiting certain things,” Harris remarked. “We need to revisit the Electoral College.”

Harris is aligning herself with ideas like expanding the Supreme Court to 13 justices, reflecting the number of district courts. Previously, her support was limited to term limits for justices, without proposing changes to the court’s size.

Another significant policy shift includes revisiting statehood for Puerto Rico, expanding her earlier support for Washington, D.C.’s statehood.

Despite these new policy positions, Harris has not committed to running in 2028, stating, “I have not made a decision. I am fully focused on these midterms.” However, she is viewed as a leading contender for the Democratic nomination.

Harris’s outreach to progressive Democrats includes contact with Zohran Mamdani and a private meeting with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at a Black women’s empowerment summit in Chicago. These moves appear to strengthen her connections with influential figures in the Democratic Party’s progressive wing ahead of a potential campaign.
