New York City Mayor Faces Criticism Over 9/11 Remarks

New York City’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under scrutiny following a post from 2023 that has resurfaced online. In the post, Mamdani discussed the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, emphasizing the casualties and suffering caused by subsequent wars.

Mamdani wrote on X, “Nearly 3,000 New Yorkers died on 9/11; 22 years later, the death hasn’t stopped. We mourn our neighbors who died that day. The hundreds of thousands who died in the wars that followed. The unknown millions injured & displaced. In their memory, we work toward a better world.”

Some families affected by 9/11 have requested the socialist mayor to refrain from attending the city’s commemoration of the attacks. This request follows backlash over Mamdani’s interview with Hasan Piker, who in 2019 controversially stated, “America deserved 9/11.” Although Mamdani initially did not condemn Piker’s comment, he later described it as “objectionable and reprehensible.”

Critics accuse Mamdani of shifting focus from the anniversary’s solemnity to the wars that ensued after 9/11. He has been criticized for using passive language to describe who carried out the attacks.

Marc Thiessen, a former Pentagon official, expressed strong disapproval, stating, “As someone who was in the Pentagon when the planes hit, this is absolutely disgraceful. You have no business ever setting foot at Ground Zero, much less on 9/11.”

Other local leaders, such as Councilwoman Inna Vernikov and Florida Rep. Randy Fine, echoed similar sentiments urging Mamdani to stay away from the ceremony.

Additionally, retired Port Authority officers have also asked Mamdani and New York Governor Kathy Hochul to avoid attending the event.

Despite the criticism, Mamdani plans to attend the commemoration, intending to honor victims, survivors, families, and first responders. He will be present alongside notable figures including Vice President JD Vance and former Presidents Biden and Bush.

A petition on Change.org, organized by several victims’ families, calls for Mamdani not to participate, questioning the appropriateness of his involvement given the tragedy’s sensitivities.

Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s office for a response.
