New Hampshire Senate Primary Heats Up

Primary Battle: Manzur vs. Pappas

Progressive momentum may benefit Karishma Manzur in the Democratic primary for the New Hampshire Senate race. However, Representative Chris Pappas currently leads in both polls and prediction markets. New Hampshire has historically leaned Democratic but is closely contested. Incumbent Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen is retiring, prompting a competitive race.

Democratic Primary Polls

Karishma Manzur faces an uphill battle against Chris Pappas. A recent University of New Hampshire poll placed Pappas 13 points ahead, at 47 percent to Manzur’s 34 percent. This survey reached 2,143 New Hampshire residents, including 881 likely Democratic voters, with a margin of error of 2.1 percentage points. This marks a decreased lead from prior UNH polls in January, April, and June.

Other recent polls show Pappas with a significant lead. A Saint Anselm College poll suggested a 31-point lead, and a GQR poll, commissioned internally by Pappas, reported a 56-point advantage.

Manzur’s Progressive Campaign

Manzur represents the progressive wing challenging the Democratic establishment. Her campaign emphasizes Medicare for All and criticizes U.S. relations with Israel as key issues differentiating her from Pappas. Meanwhile, Pappas maintains his position as the race’s frontrunner with strong odds in prediction markets.

Republican Dynamics and Sununu’s Challenge

Former Senator John Sununu, a formidable Republican contender, could shift the race’s dynamics. Recent polls indicate a competitive general election scenario between Sununu and Pappas. Fabrizio, Lee & Associates found them nearly tied, and a UNH poll placed Sununu slightly ahead. However, some polls still favor Pappas over Sununu strongly.

New Hampshire’s Political Landscape

New Hampshire is politically mixed, tilting Democratic at the federal level but often electing Republican governors. Key to victory will be winning over the state’s 351,815 registered independents. The state’s voting history shows slight Democratic advantages, but recent gubernatorial wins by Republicans indicate potential challenges ahead.

Senate Control and Democratic Strategy

Flipping New Hampshire could complicate Democrats’ Senate control goals. Republicans currently control the upper chamber. Democrats need to win four seats to gain a majority, facing challenges in swing states like Georgia and Michigan.

A shift in New Hampshire would narrow their options significantly, pushing them to target traditionally Republican territories. The Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball rate the New Hampshire Senate race as Lean Democratic.

Election Day Details

Tuesday’s primary will influence the November election’s shape. Voting hours vary, with many polls closing at 7 p.m. ET. A close watch on the state’s evolving political landscape is crucial for both parties.
