It’s been 18 months since I faced a stage 4 cancer diagnosis at 40. Sharing my rare appendiceal cancer story last February starkly impacted me and my family. As a journalist for Fox News for 16 years, I found myself part of the alarming trend of adults under 50 diagnosed with cancer. I always considered myself healthy and active, making my diagnosis a shocking turn of events. Just two years prior, while pregnant, I had another rare diagnosis. Dull abdominal pain in Summer 2023 escalated into an emotional cancer battle.
Since my diagnosis, I’ve embarked on a transformational journey, exploring life, faith, and personal resilience. Despite doubts, my daughter remains my guiding light. Ashley attributes outdoor activities to her well-being.
I underwent 24 rounds of chemotherapy and sought a second opinion in October 2024, flying to Houston to meet with MD Anderson Cancer Center experts. My treatment plan evolved, involving essential surgery in February. Though cancer persists, we’re tackling it with renewed vigor, grateful for options.
Despite grueling treatments, life offered valuable lessons. People asked if I’m in remission, given my positive outlook. Surprisingly, I didn’t lose hair or face sickness as feared. Aside from cancer and seasonal daycare viruses, I feel healthy.
Post-surgery recovery exceeded expectations. I reunited with my family in less than a week, thanks to my care team, healthy lifestyle, and outdoor activities. My husband and daughter offer unwavering support, and prayer is a daily ritual. Gratitude shields me from negativity.
As a former competitive figure skater, the ice remains a sanctuary. Skating taught resilience; regardless of falls, life goes on. Cancer is daunting, but focusing on blessings helps. I cherish connections, especially from others who battled cancer.
A supportive healthcare team enriches my journey. We adapt, finding joy in challenging situations. Though separated during Texas visits, my daughter thrives with grandparents and school friends. As a couple, we cherish time together, exploring Houston.
While future worries linger, I prioritize living for today. Uncertainties shouldn’t yield stress. Cancer is gradual, akin to climbing ‘Rocky Steps.’ Faith overcomes fear, though demanding. Strength endures.
My brother’s advice offered clarity: it’s less about events than reactions. Echoing the idea that life is shaped more by responses than circumstances. I’ll continue navigating cancer as another life obstacle, through prayer and normalcy.
Focusing on health remains crucial. I savor outdoor walks, writing, and music; embracing roles as sister, daughter, friend, wife, and mother. My daughter remains my greatest blessing.
