The unexpected victory of Democratic socialist candidate Melat Kiros in Colorado’s June primary has taken many by surprise. By defeating 15-term incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette with a double-digit margin, Kiros has highlighted a growing divide within the Democratic Party. Political strategist Doug Friednash remarked, ‘If you had told me this woman would have won by 13 points, I would have bet my house against that.’

Friednash, who has witnessed Colorado transform politically over three decades, has served in various political roles in Denver and now works as a partner at Brownstein. He expressed his astonishment, noting, ‘I never would have thought we would have seen a victory of that magnitude here in Denver.’ Kiros’ triumph is part of a broader trend, with far-left candidates making significant gains in Democratic primaries nationwide. This shift has raised concerns among established Democrats, including Friednash, about the party’s future.

‘It was one thing watching this happen in New York. But when it happens in a state like Colorado, which is really the gateway to the West, it tells me that this issue is going to spread and may be a cancer to the Democratic Party if they don’t figure out what our values are.’ – Doug Friednash

Kiros’ campaign’s success relied on a robust ground game, involving door-to-door efforts and extensive voter outreach. Her platform focused on universal healthcare, affordable housing, and utilities, resonating strongly with younger voters disillusioned by establishment Democrats. Friednash stated, ‘I think the number one issue is affordability, by far.’

Jon Caldara of the Independence Institute also voiced concerns about Colorado’s shift away from its pro-business roots. He pointed out issues like affordability, homelessness, and business exodus, predicting that these problems will intensify. Caldara compared the situation to a ‘French Revolution thing,’ where the Democratic Party in Colorado faces internal conflicts between traditional Democrats and socialists.

Gene Maine, who fled the Soviet Union as a teenager, now sees unsettling parallels between Colorado’s direction and his past. As someone who experienced life under socialism, he expresses caution about repeating historical mistakes, particularly among young voters drawn to democratic socialist ideas.

Despite apprehensions, Kiros and her supporters argue their policies are a practical reaction to voter frustration with the Democratic Party’s handling of economic challenges. Her campaign, backed by groups like the Democratic Socialists of America and Justice Democrats, focused on themes like Medicare for all and public utilities. With the general election looming, Kiros is expected to secure a victory given the district’s Democratic leanings.
