Mount Carmel’s Nathan Samuels felt embarrassed by the early struggles in their game against St. Joseph Regional of New Jersey, broadcast nationally by ESPN. The team had given up two touchdowns on special teams and a safety. Determined to change the narrative, senior running back Samuels executed a vital fake punt play.
“The sideline was down,” Samuels explained. “The coaches talked about playing through adversity.” His decisive 47-yard run shifted momentum, helping Mount Carmel overcome a 30-0 deficit for a remarkable 48-44 victory.
Following Samuels’ pivotal play, senior quarterback Brady Cloherty delivered an exceptional performance. He threw seven touchdown passes and accumulated 309 yards on 26 completions from 41 attempts. Cloherty’s immediate action after the fake punt included a 27-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Marshaun Thornton, who scored twice during Mount Carmel’s surge of 48 points.
“The 47-yard run was transformative,” Cloherty said. “Nate is an outstanding player, both athletic and resilient. His ability to catch and run with the ball creates significant opportunities.” Quentin Burrell, a senior receiver bound for Michigan, secured a 35-yard pass late in the game, clinching the victory for Mount Carmel.
Samuels’ role was crucial, contributing 102 yards on 12 carries and 45 yards from two catches. The game-changing run came after the team was stopped short on their opening drive. “We consistently go for it on fourth down,” Coach Jordan Lynch stated. “Nate’s move was a catalyst, allowing our team to find its rhythm.” Samuels, an aspiring college recruit, led the team with 719 rushing yards last season.
Samuels attributes his motivation and versatile playing style to his family. His grandfather introduced him to football at age five, shaping his passion for the sport. “He pushed me to the field early on, which was transformative,” Samuels recalled. “His passing in 2019 was a pivotal moment for me.” Samuels also credits his father and uncle, both accomplished athletes, for his athletic prowess.
The young running back is not only excelling in football but demonstrates speed as a sprinter in track and field. His success includes significant performances, such as last year’s game versus Brother Rice. Samuels also values competing with his brother in basketball, which has aided his personal growth.
Despite not scoring a touchdown in the game, Samuels views the victory as memorable. “Winning state championships is incredible, but this experience ranks among my greatest,” he said, emphasizing his assist to teammates.
