Jarren Cooley’s Journey from Sprinter to Star Cornerback

Jarren Cooley’s Football Transformation

Jarren Cooley, a senior cornerback for Wauconda, embodies football on the field in his No. 2 jersey. Previously a sprinter, Cooley transformed into a dedicated football player over the past 15 months. “After I started playing, I couldn’t stop,” he said. “It didn’t matter how tired I was, I wanted to play, and now when I wake up, it’s what I’m thinking about.”

Cooley’s rapid shift from a novice to a key player for the undefeated Wauconda Bulldogs is remarkable. “It goes together with me like peanut butter and jelly,” he shared. Cooley’s football journey began in his sophomore year when he was in Coach Chris Prostka’s physical education class.

Coach Support and Skill Development

Cooley almost chose football in his sophomore year, but fully committed by the following spring thanks to Prostka’s influence. “He knew that I had athletic ability, but he said that he would push me,” Cooley explained. “I didn’t know if I’d like to be pushed, but he knew my potential.” Prostka saw Cooley’s athletic talent and appreciated his coachability.

Prostka emphasized Cooley’s dedication to committing fully to the task. “As a junior, there was a lot of us trying to decide where best to use him,” Prostka noted. “He doesn’t do things halfway, and if you give everything you have, he’ll give everything he has in return.” Cooley started fully embracing football, leading to his fast progress.

Impactful Plays and Defensive Skills

Wauconda senior lineman Jayden Sanders observed Cooley’s growth. “It’s a crazy thing to see him go from not knowing the plays to making big plays,” Sanders said. Cooley’s position as a starting cornerback suits his technique and quick reflexes. “At cornerback, you have to stay levelheaded,” Cooley observed. “Our coaches say to make them snap it one more time. You have to live for the next play.”

Cooley intercepted a pass during Wauconda’s 48-14 victory over Grayslake North. His interception set Wauconda’s offense in a strong position, leading to a touchdown. “He watched the most film on the team — around three hours,” Prostka noted. Cooley executed the play with precision and received team accolades. “The most fun part was having so many teammates come up to me,” Cooley said.

A Home Away From Home

Cooley’s aggressive tackling highlights his growth over the past year. “We work on a lot of tackling in practice,” Cooley explained. “Cornerback is played with a lot of technique, so to bring pop onto someone is a great feeling.” He values his team, stating, “When I’m outside my house, these guys are my family.” Cooley remains humble and seeks improvement daily. He cherishes every game with his teammates.
