Senior kicker Danny Moscoso thrives under pressure, a skill honed as the goalkeeper for South Elgin’s boys soccer team. His ability to remain composed has now translated into success on the football field. Though accustomed to tense moments, Moscoso faced a new type of pressure with the football team this summer.
Moscoso nailed a crucial 32-yard field goal with just four seconds remaining, sealing a thrilling 29-27 victory over West Aurora. This was his first ever field goal in a game setting. South Elgin (6-1, 5-0) saw contributions from Oliver Johnston and Carter McDonald, who both threw touchdown passes. Lamari Smith impressed with 158 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Diesel Fecarotta added to the score by blocking a punt and recovering it in the end zone. Semaj Collier caught nine passes, covering 100 yards and scoring a touchdown.
West Aurora (4-3, 4-1) had Tyler Fecht, who completed five passes, with touchdown passes to Richard Bell Jr. and Brendon Salach. Fecht also caught an 11-yard touchdown from Bell during a trick play. Michael Williams ran for 81 yards and added another touchdown.
With the game on the line, South Elgin had options. They could attempt a touchdown, rely on Jeffrey Espana for a field goal, or trust Moscoso to attempt the kick. Coach Pat Pistorio chose Moscoso, praising his competitive spirit and readiness. Moscoso remained calm, reflecting his soccer experience.
South Elgin lost a two-touchdown lead but equalized with 1:18 remaining in the fourth quarter when McDonald connected with Collier for a 23-yard touchdown. The team attempted a 2-point conversion to win but fell short. However, an onside kick recovery gave them another chance. Facing a fourth-and-7, McDonald swiftly transitioned to holder for Moscoso’s decisive kick.
“The snap was a bit high,” McDonald noted. “I just had to get it down. I didn’t speak to him — he knew what he had to do.”
Moscoso ensured he was prepared at the summer football camp, confident he’d rise to the occasion. Post-kick, his teammates showed strong support for his efforts.
“They were glad I had the chance,” Moscoso shared. “They support me a lot.”
With a win over Elgin, the Storm could claim the conference title. Friday’s dramatic game positioned them well.
“That game was fantastic,” Pistorio remarked. “I’m excited to see our program grow.”
