At Louisville Slugger Sports Complex in Peoria, Marist junior Lexi Kyros showcased her exceptional skills behind the plate during the Class 4A state semifinal game. Though Marist faced a narrow 2-1 defeat against Lincoln-Way West, Kyros proved her worth as a Michigan commit by making crucial defensive plays.
In a thrilling sequence, Kyros expertly threw out one runner at home and caught another attempting to steal second. “It energizes me,” Kyros shared, emphasizing the importance of minimizing pitches. Her dedication to securing outs for her team highlights her commitment to Marist’s success.
“As many things as I can do, as many outs as I can get for them, I will,”Kyros stated.
Despite the loss, Kyros remained optimistic about the positives, focusing on the team’s achievements, particularly how Marist reached the state stage after missing out last year. The RedHawks will now play Oswego for third place, building on their successful season.
Kyros was joined by notable performances from teammates. Ellie Holmstrom, Layla Peters, and Maddie Rogers contributed two hits each. Soleil Tate from Wisconsin demonstrated skill with six strikeouts. Abby Brueggmann of St. Xavier secured the pitching win for Lincoln-Way West, alongside Reese Forsythe’s pivotal triple and Reese Rourke’s daring home steal.
The RedHawks had faced Lincoln-Way West earlier in the season with an 11-5 victory. However, conditions differed in Peoria. Despite strong efforts, Marist struggled to capitalize on runners in scoring positions.
Marist’s only run was secured through Holmstrom’s double and an RBI squeeze bunt by Alia Rowles. Head coach Colleen Phelan praised Kyros’s leadership, highlighting her impact on the game stringently.
“She’s always ready for the next play,”said Phelan.
Despite a challenging game, Kyros looks forward to the next season, aiming for further growth and contribution to Marist’s endeavors.
