Nashville Airport Set for Renaming in Honor of Dolly Parton

The Nashville International Airport is progressing toward a name change to honor the late country music icon Dolly Parton. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority recently announced a unanimous vote, 6-0, to initiate the process of renaming the airport. While the final name has not been decided, ongoing discussions aim to respectfully incorporate Parton’s legacy.

Officials clarified that this vote is the first step in a complex process, with more information expected in the coming months. The decision has drawn significant attention and support, including a petition with over 155,000 signatures advocating for the airport to be named “Dolly Parton International Airport.”

Dolly Parton, a Tennessee native, had a profound impact on the state. Her work in music, philanthropy, and literacy through the Imagination Library program made her one of Tennessee’s most celebrated individuals.

In the past, Parton declined formal honors in her home state. In 2021, she requested that Tennessee lawmakers withdraw a proposal for a statue of her at the state Capitol. However, she expressed openness to such an honor in the future, stating she would be proud of it after her lifetime.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and the Nashville International Airport had initially announced plans in August to consider the renaming, following Parton’s death at age 80. Conversations with Parton’s representatives indicated appreciation and willingness to discuss the proposal further.
