Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a medieval village mysteriously abandoned in Germany. This discovery raises questions about why the residents left. The excavation took place at the Am Frevelgraben site in Halberstadt, located in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
The site revealed various traces of a medieval settlement, such as parts of a multi-tiered ditch system. The State Office for Monument Preservation and Archaeology Saxony-Anhalt announced these findings on August 24.
Excavation Details
The excavation began in March, prior to the development of a nearby industrial park. Historical maps suggest that the settlement might be the medieval village known as Kühlingen. Researchers documented rows of pit houses, settlement pits, and two wells. Traces show that residents used the nearby riverbank extensively.
The settlement seems to have developed in two phases, with some houses built directly next to others. This suggests that new homes were constructed as the settlement’s footprint changed.
Artifact Findings
Though the remains are well-preserved, very few artifacts were found. This lack of artifacts is surprising and noteworthy. A few scattered ceramic shards and some metal items, including a bronze tap and belt buckles, were unearthed. These represent only a small portion of the original possessions.
The absence of destruction or fire evidence makes the site peculiar. The village was abandoned in an orderly fashion, according to Oliver Dietrich, a spokesperson for the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology Saxony-Anhalt.
Ongoing Analysis
Currently, the reason behind the abandonment remains unclear. Further analysis is expected to yield more insights into the abandonment process. Although the settlement is confirmed as medieval, the exact time of abandonment is uncertain.
To determine a precise date, radiocarbon analyses of animal bones will be conducted. This village is part of a broader historical context, as many medieval villages in Germany were deserted during the 14th and 15th centuries. Dietrich associates these abandonments with factors like the Black Death, migration, and climate change.
Similar discoveries have occurred elsewhere. In neighboring Poland, archaeologists recently found another medieval settlement, Stolzenberg, hidden in a forest.
