Midland Shooting Leaves One Dead, Suspect Killed

Officials have confirmed the death of a suspect involved in a shooting in Midland, Texas. According to Midland Mayor Lori Blong, the incident resulted in one fatality and injuries to 11 others.

The shooting started around 8 a.m. in one area of the city before moving near a veterinary hospital. Approximately two hours after the incident began, a suspect was involved in a standoff with law enforcement officers.

It sounded like at least 40 shots were fired, said Andrea Mendias, who works at a nearby automobile body shop. Mendias captured video footage, showing officers emerging from the back of an armored vehicle and deploying robots to the location.

Mayor Blong commented on the ongoing situation, stating, Officers are containing the situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and our officers.

The Midland Police Department released a social media statement shortly after the shooting:

“Midland Police responded to an active shooter incident Friday morning in the 4600 block of West Wall Street. Officers heard gunfire coming from the building and worked quickly to secure and clear the area. Armored units were deployed, and partner agencies assisted in the response. Efforts to bring the standoff with the shooter to a safe resolution are ongoing.”

Midland, home to about 140,000 residents, is located in the center of Texas’s oil-producing region. Six years ago, a tragic shooting rampage occurred nearby. In that case, a former oil services worker killed seven people and injured 24 others while randomly shooting in the Odessa and Midland areas. The cities are situated over 300 miles west of Dallas.

This remains a developing story.
