A father from Michigan has come forward revealing the turmoil his family faced after discussing their concerns about his daughter competing against a transgender athlete in girls’ volleyball. Sean Lechner shared with Fox News Digital the severe threats they received, including messages insulting their race, threats of violence, and even threats to bomb their home. The situation escalated to the point where the FBI became involved, although they have not commented publicly.
The controversy arose when Briley Lechner, a high school volleyball player at Monroe High School, unknowingly faced a transgender athlete during a match. She and her father spoke out against this, emphasizing the importance of protecting girls’ sports. Their stance attracted both support and hostility, with Sean Lechner absorbing much of the backlash.
“We’ve been threatened with violence, called Nazis, subjected to racist insults, and even received threats to blow up our home,” Sean Lechner told Fox News Digital.
“All of this because I’m a father standing beside my daughter, her teammates, and every female athlete who deserves safety, privacy, fairness, and equal opportunity.”
Briley felt like she was abandoned by figures in political and educational authority within the state. The experience left her with the impression that her family’s concerns were not a priority. She expressed her frustration over having to be a voice for change at her age: “For me, a 16-year-old girl, to have to be the one that speaks out about it and fights for the change, it’s just not right, in my opinion.”
The issue started in the fall of 2024 during Briley’s freshman year when rumors circulated about competing against a biological male. Sean Lechner filed a Title IX complaint, arguing Briley and her teammates shared facilities with the transgender athlete without prior notice.
Fox News Digital did not disclose details about the transgender athlete, but it’s known that Monroe High School’s participation policy allowed such involvement. The case contributed to a broader debate encompassing transgender rights and women’s sports.
Government investigations commenced into the policy of Monroe Public Schools and Ann Arbor Public Schools, questioning whether they addressed parents’ concerns satisfactorily. The national discussion transformed when the Supreme Court permitted sex-separated teams under Title IX, although states are not mandated to adopt these practices.
As her family faces threats, Sean Lechner says their commitment to ensuring safety and fairness for female athletes has solidified. He claimed faith and family unity enabled them to counter hatred with purpose.
Briley’s future educational decisions may now depend on the colleges’ policies regarding transgender athletes. This experience left her considering institutions beyond Michigan for her collegiate soccer career.
“We won’t be intimidated, and we won’t be silenced,” Sean robustly stated.
“We will continue to fight until my daughter—and every female athlete—has the safety, privacy, fairness, and opportunities they deserve.”
