Raiders Look to Future with Fernando Mendoza in Quarterback Role

The Las Vegas Raiders have placed their trust in Fernando Mendoza, who stands out as the Indiana Hoosiers champion and Heisman Trophy winner, selected during the past April’s NFL Draft. However, the timeline for Mendoza stepping into the starting quarterback role remains uncertain, especially with veteran Kirk Cousins joining the team this offseason.

In a recent discussion with ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Kirk Cousins shared insights on the dynamic within the quarterback room during training camp. Cousins remarked, A good quarterback room. We’ve enjoyed working together as a group. We have good dialogue every day. I think the organization is positioned well, having drafted Fernando. Cousins added, I’m gonna try to hold him off as long as I can. We’ll see how it goes up ahead.

When Graziano pointed out the dual role Cousins plays in both competing with and supporting Mendoza, Cousins replied, Oh yeah, you can do both. You can do both.

Mendoza enters the NFL with impressive accolades and expectations. Following a similar approach seen in other teams, having a veteran start initially could help Mendoza ease into the starter position. Last month, head coach Klint Kubiak confirmed Cousins as the starter at training camp’s onset. The decision on who will lead the team in preseason and regular-season openers remains pending.

Kubiak stated, He’s the guy, and he deserves it because he’s played really good football. But I want Fernando and Aidan [O’Connell] to push him.

As Cousins embraces his role with the Raiders, this marks his fourth team since his NFL debut in 2012. The four-time Pro Bowler is set to support Mendoza by sharing his NFL experiences while aiming for victories with Las Vegas.

Cousins expressed, Honestly, it’s exceeded my expectations. You know, I tried to get my mind right for living on Mars when I moved here, and it’s been great. It’s sunny every day. Great culture here. I like my teammates. I like the coaches. I like the system. So, I’m excited now; we just gotta get the ball right and go win some games.

Expectations for Raiders’ Upcoming Season

Reports from Fox Sports last month offered a glimpse into Raiders’ prospects, with sportsbooks setting their win total over 5.5 games. Achieving six wins would double last season’s result, which led them to acquire the No. 1 pick for Mendoza. Observers keenly anticipate Mendoza’s advancement into the starting QB role.
