Mexico Aims to Boost Tourism with World Cup

Mexican officials are optimistic about the World Cup’s potential to elevate Mexico’s status as a top global tourism destination. Despite critics questioning the long-term benefits, Mexico is aiming to climb to the fifth position among the most-visited countries worldwide.

Mexico holds the sixth place, following France, Spain, the United States, Italy, and Turkey. The country’s ambitions are reflected in statements made by President Claudia Sheinbaum regarding her administration’s goals, which extend until 2030.

The 2026 World Cup, the largest in history, will see 104 games played across 48 countries, with the United States, Canada, and Mexico co-hosting the event. Mexico City will host the final game between Mexico and England, drawing international attention.

Prior to the tournament, Mexican organizers projected that 5.5 million visitors would come to Mexico during the six-week event, generating billions in economic activity. While these figures face skepticism, Mexico is positioning itself strategically, especially in light of restrictive U.S. immigration policies under President Trump.

Gabriela Cuevas, representing the Mexican government for the World Cup, emphasized Mexico’s hospitality and openness to international visitors, facilitating travel for citizens of certain countries.
