Maverick Ohle, a graduate of Naperville Central, chose to transfer from Ohio University to North Central College. As a sophomore, the 6-foot-2, 282-pound defensive tackle quickly made an impact at the NCAA Division III powerhouse. “I knew joining a successful program close to home was the right decision,” Ohle shared. “For anyone aiming for DIII, this place is ideal.”
Ohle plays a significant role in filling the void left by John Sullivan, the Division III defensive player of the year. Sullivan’s performance had helped the Cardinals reach the national championship game repeatedly. With Sullivan’s departure, Ohle and teammate Graham Wight committed to strengthening their game together. “We knew we had to step up,” Ohle said. “During the offseason, Graham and I focused on becoming the best defensive tackles we could be.”
The two will demonstrate their efforts during the season opener against No. 2 Bethel at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. “Leaders like JP Sullivan are hard to replace,” said NCC coach Brad Spencer. “We expect our graduates to be remembered, not missed.”
Last season, Ohle recorded 35 tackles, with seven for loss and two sacks. He earned All-CCIW first-team and All-Region third-team honors. Reflecting on his progress, Ohle acknowledged, “Playing alongside Sullivan was initially challenging, but he made me a better player.”
Ohle has potential for significant growth. Coach Spencer recognized his talent early from Naperville Central. “We’ve seen Maverick’s potential since he was 17. He’s worked hard, and that’s essential for trust and success.”
Previously, Ohle played under Naperville Central’s coach Mike Ulreich, Spencer’s former NCC teammate. At Ohio University, Ohle faced uncertainty when coach Tim Albin resigned after their MAC championship win in 2024. Ohle remarked, “The future became unclear, prompting my decision to enter the transfer portal.”
Upon returning to his hometown, Ohle adapted quickly to the Cardinals’ environment. “North Central has a unique community feel,” Ohle said. “The camaraderie and relationships are outstanding.”
