Federal Government Expands AI Use in Hiring Process

The federal government plans to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) in interviewing job applicants soon, according to U.S. officials. AI will initially be tested with the Tech Force program, which aims to recruit tech experts from the private sector for two-year government roles.

The platform CodeSignal will be used to assess applicants. Currently, the federal government employs about 1.9 million people and is exploring AI tools to streamline the hiring process. This move aligns with recent guidance from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), urging agencies to integrate AI in hiring while maintaining human oversight for critical decisions. OPM also launched a tool earlier this year to help create job descriptions using AI.

Scott Kupor, who leads the OPM, has advocated for a faster hiring process and for welcoming early-career professionals. This step aims to balance the age distribution in the federal workforce.

The AI integration includes providing personnel offices with AI programs like Microsoft’s Copilot, Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Google’s Gemini. In the Tech Force pilot, AI will conduct structured interviews with standardized queries, record audio, and summarize it for hiring managers to review.

CodeSignal’s AI tools offer various options, including virtual interviews and text-based assessments. These tools are designed to assist managers by providing transcriptions of candidate interactions.

Officials predict that AI’s role in federal hiring will expand over time, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of recruitment processes.
